February 2005Dear Friends and Family,
For those of you keeping track, this is the third annual installment of the Hall family
Valentine's Day Newsletter. We left the Christmas card circuit several years ago... Too
much competition, and we consistently missed the deadline.Recently I heard someone tell of a Southwest Airlines flight attendant who, while reciting
the obligatory warnings and instructions at the start of the flight, said, "In the event of a
sudden drop in cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will fall from compartment above. Quickly pull
the oxygen mask to your face and secure it over your nose and mouth and continue to breathe
normally. If you are traveling with a child, please apply your mask first, and then assist
your child. If you are traveling with more than one child, decide now which one you love more."With that in mind, I have struggled with the decision of which child to write about first ...
As judiciously as I could, I used this logic ... Everyone starts with the youngest or oldest. In
an effort to show that we tried diligently to keep things equitable, I'll start with the
middle...Emma Grace recently turned three, and is proud to tell anyone who asks (and quite a few who
don't). She eagerly awaits her dance class each week and performed wonderfully in her Christmas
recital. Lucky for her, she got her mother's dancing genes. (To the extent Daddy ever had
any, he must have left them on the dance floor at his Senior Prom.) Emma loves her morning
ritual of sitting on a stool next to Mommy in the bathroom, both of them looking in the
mirror, applying makeup (Emma's is fake) and fixing their hair. She is learning her letters
and surprises us now and then when she recognizes ones that we haven't taught her yet.Now, the oldest ... Brenna (6) is excelling in school, learning to read, write, and even do a
little arithmetic (she has already surpassed her parents' math skills). Her favorite out-of-
school activity is a toss-up between riding her bike (a two-wheeler ... when did that happen?),
going to gymnastics, and just generally using her vivid imagination. She loves to ride her
bike up and down our street as fast as she can, and scare the living daylights out of her
father. Brenna is such a good big sister to Emma Grace and Eliza. She is a big help around the
house, and does what she can to keep Mom and Dad in line.Finally, the youngest ... Eliza Claire was coaxed into the world with a little help from a
healthy dosage of Pitosin on May 10 of last year. Since that day, she has brought a
wonderful, peaceful, content feeling into our home. She almost never looks at anyone without
getting an enormous mouthy grin on her face. Her laugh is less frequent, and much softer than you
would expect after seeing the prelude. She loves her big sisters (when they're not mauling her
with well-intentioned hugs and kisses), and they both do a wonderful job taking care of her.We hope that this letter finds each of you enjoying a romantic (if age-appropriate)
Valentine's holiday. We continue to be extremely grateful for our wonderful family and friends,
